I recently had a conversation with my friend, Chaplin, and Poet, Jeff Brunoski. He had read a short piece by Langdon Hammer, titled John Koethe’s Red Shoes. (1)  Later, Jeff sent me a copy of the article. The article begins with a quote from John Koethe, “I’ve always thought of poetry as a kind of inner soliloquy, reflecting the capacity for self-consciousness that makes us human.” Hammer reminds us that it is a reference to John Stuart Mill’s definition of poetry as “overheard speech.” The article proceeds to explore how the ebb and flow of Koethe’s inner life shaped his poetry moment to moment.

I can identify with Koethe’s inner soliloquy and adapt John Stuart Mill’s overheard speech to a photographic equivalent: a glimpsed tableau.

I asked how Jeff’s son, Christian, was doing in Berlin. Christian is an artist who works in various media, including photography. As it turns out, Christian had a photo, Light Shadow Inverse, displayed at the 2011 Alumni Juried Exhibition Recollections at Augsburg College. Jeff sent me a JPG of the photo as it was displayed.

When I saw it, I immediately wanted to share it here on my blog. I am intrigued by the shapes, textures, muted tones.

Green Lantern, Santiago de Compostela

Green Lantern and Arches, Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 2005

For hundreds of years, pilgrims have made their way along the Camino towards the Cathedral de Santiago: each soul on his/her unique journey. The physical and emotional effort that the traveler invests are the catalysts that drive the reaction called enlightenment.

I don’t remember taking this particular photo. From the sequence, I know that it was the day after we arrived in Santiago de Compostela after two weeks on the Camino. We had pulled into the city late at night, having ridden the last leg on a local train. We got there at the start of a Galician holiday. The cathedral and streets were full of people.

I like this image for a number of reasons: the mottled colors, the variety of textures, the flat planes of the walls, the curves of the arches, and the green lantern surrounded by stone. I also like the clues of what is not in the picture: the water bottle and a person’s shadow on the right.

The beauty of digital photography is that it is possible to take a photo and create multiple interpretations that can be directed towards particular niche audiences.

Parched Landscape along the Camino de Santiago

In August, the farmlands of Castile and Leon are scorched. Arid breezes provide momentary relief but the price is thirst. In the fields the brittle wheat stubble is the color of ancient bones. The land is quiet, little moves except an occasional bird, soaring in the thermals. In the distance, on the ribbon that is the Camino, the outline of a Pilgrim – a black Dali character  – shimmer in the heat.

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela takes the Pilgrim due west through this parched landscape for hundreds of kilometers before eventually entering the lush green lands of Galicia.

Shepard and His Flock – Camino de Santiago de Compostela

Shepard and his flock on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 2005

In August, 2005, my wife and I traveled by bicycle and train along one of the paths of the Camino, from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela. There are several paths that make up the Camino and we were on the Camino Frances, a path that pilgrims have followed for over 800 years.

The weather was hot and dry, except for the day I took the picture of the Shepard and His Flock. We were in the middle of the meseta, a flat empty area, where the sun and sky rule over the land like medieval kings.

This day had started like all the others, a breakfast of eggs, ham, dark bread and coffee, and then on the bikes. By mid morning, the clear blue sky had given way to a towering wall of storm clouds on the western horizon.

The storm approached rapidly. We stopped to put on our rain ponchos. Before I had my poncho adjusted an icy wind came up the road. The sweat on our bodies dried instantly and goosebumps appeared all over us. A steel grey wall of rain advanced toward us. We started to ride. The wind increased and the rain hit us with stinging force. Our light weight ponchos were shredded and we were submerged in icy waves of rain.

Luckily, the wind blew straight up the road and we could ride into it. Had it been from the side, it would have blown us off the road. We rode on in the storm, nearly blind from the rain, sometimes barely making headway against the wind. After 20 minutes the storm eased and in another 10 minutes stopped, leaving behind a flat grey sky.

We stopped in a small village, removed our ruined rain gear, and ate a couple of energy bars. The sun began to breakthrough the overcast and cast a theatrical light on the land. That is when the sheepherder appeared with his dog and flock.

My wife and I were both struck by the symbolism of the Shepard leading his flock along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

To this day, we talk about Shepard and his flock on the Camino, after the ferocious storm.
