Green Lantern, Santiago de Compostela

Green Lantern and Arches, Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 2005

For hundreds of years, pilgrims have made their way along the Camino towards the Cathedral de Santiago: each soul on his/her unique journey. The physical and emotional effort that the traveler invests are the catalysts that drive the reaction called enlightenment.

I don’t remember taking this particular photo. From the sequence, I know that it was the day after we arrived in Santiago de Compostela after two weeks on the Camino. We had pulled into the city late at night, having ridden the last leg on a local train. We got there at the start of a Galician holiday. The cathedral and streets were full of people.

I like this image for a number of reasons: the mottled colors, the variety of textures, the flat planes of the walls, the curves of the arches, and the green lantern surrounded by stone. I also like the clues of what is not in the picture: the water bottle and a person’s shadow on the right.
